Best things of 2023

  • Hellbender – this came out in 2021 but I became obsessed with it this year and I’ve watched it over and over and over again and I love…just thinking about it.
  • Poor Things – a late-breaking obsession, the last movie I saw and such a marvel. When I left the theater my entire body was BUZZING because it was so exciting and joyful and weird.
  • Screaming Females – I fell in love with this band this year so of course they’ve now disbanded.
  • Amyl and the Sniffers – also fell in love with this band this year and saw them in Boston and it was such a thrill to see a woman screaming on a stage after years of pandemic quiet.
  • Purple Rain – somehow I had never really spent quality time with this album and movie until this year? Well don’t worry, I’ve made up for it and now I know all of the words.
  • Teena Marie – um, she’s the greatest???
  • Going to an X-Files convention “ironically”?, telling Jeffrey Spender how much we liked his work as the Great Mutato, and getting very loudly drunk at some of Saratoga Springs’ finest dining establishments
  • Getting my first tattoo, booking my second tattoo
  • Powerlifting powerlifting powerlifting: deadlifting for outlaw bikers, doing my first meet, channeling all of my pent up fury into lifting heavy things, finding an amazing community of nerds and weirdos while doing it
  • Reunions, rekindlings: seeing friends, eating good food with them, laughing loud laughs with them in Providence, NYC, DC, Minneapolis, Toronto, Hartford, and a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place halfway between here and Northampton
  • Dragging Aaron to Sudbury for the first time and obviously making him go on the Big Nickel mine tour
  • An archive trip to the Library of Congress – my first archive foray since the pandemic, and the first for my new book project
  • Having a new book project (this is good and I recommend it but it also causes me to scream and moan constantly because writing a book is terrible and I don’t know why anyone does it)
  • Committing to weird curly bangs, at least for now
  • This dress and this dress
  • My podcast husband coming to Middletown to do a show and playing an Irish jig with my actual husband
  • Owning a dough proofer: who knew that a box that maintains a perfectly tepid temperature would change my life
  • Secret Caverns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Owning a bright green, ankle-length tailored wool coat that gives off serious Victorian caroler vibes and literally stops traffic: I was walking to work and someone actually pulled over to tell me the coat was great. I know it is a lot to shell out in British dollars but I truly cannot recommend owning this coat enough, it is a life changing coat. Mine is HOT PINK on the inside!!!!!!
  • Playing theremin in public
